STARKVILLE — Mississippi State baseball avoided a series sweep with a 14-8 win against Florida (27-15, 6-12 SEC) at Dudy Noble Field on April 20.
Early in the game, it looked like the Bulldogs (24-16, 6-12) were headed for the loss. Karson Ligon hit Gators third baseman Bobby Boser on the very first pitch of the game. Colby Shelton, the next Florida batter, then smashed a two-run homer.
But MSU third baseman Ace Reese responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game. Mississippi State never trailed again, scoring five runs in the third inning. Catcher Joe Powell batted in three of them on a three-run homer.
Florida scored three runs in the eighth inning but couldn’t tie it. Mississippi State had five more runs in the bottom of the inning, kick-started by a solo home run from Gehrig Frei, his second of the game and third of the series.
The Bulldogs will play No. 11 Ole Miss (28-12, 10-8) at Trustmark Park in Pearl on April 22 (6 p.m. CT) before beginning a three-game road series at No. 9 Auburn (27-13, 9-9).
