Optic Mouse Has Mind of Its Own!

Just bought an optical mouse w/ cord last week, & already having probs. Never had an optical mouse before. It has a mind of its own! It wanders whereever it wants to even though I want to make it go somewhere else. Before, I just cleaned it out when it would do this & it did the trick. How do I correct this prob w/ an optical mouse? It's doing this so often, I just want to throw in the trash. It's a Microsoft one, btw. Any ideas or how to repair?

I had that happen one time with a Microsoft optical mouse too. Seems it was a bit unhappy with the particular mouse pad I had at the time. Changed mouse pads - problem solved for me.

I've got a first gen Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer and a buzz light year mouse pad. Buzz takes up the right half of my mouse pad and is almost completely white. When my mouse wanders over him, it goes insane, it spins around quickly and wanders around.

I have a optical from logitech and it would act the same way. I solved it by using a black fabric mouse pad.

The IR in an optical mouse can be very sensitive to high contrast surfaces where there are light and dark changes, fake wood grain for instance. It causes the IR beam to jump around. It's best to keep in on a solid light colored surface if possible. But even then you may still notice some movement. I keep mine on light tan leather pad and it still moves a little when not in use but I keep the sensitivity ajusted to maximun too. Decrease the sensitivity in the mouse properties and see if that helps.

My inlaws have a bulldog mousepad with a lot of black and grey in it. Sometimes when you go up, the pointer goes to the bottom of the screen. It is their mousepad.

Thanks everyone! I will check into the mouse pad thing. I currently own one of those "futuristic" very thin mouse pads that isn't made out of that rubbery material that tends to wear pretty quickly. It's a map of the world, btw.

If it is reflective at all or isn't a "smooth" surface, then it might cause problems. My parents had a Dell mouse pad that was sort of reflective and had a "ruffle's ridges" type look to it and that caused problems. Went to a solid color and they had zero problems. I use a fabric mouse pad.

i use a mousepad that is a regular type mousepad. no fancy colors or anything and a picture of a Harley Davidson on it and never any problems........i tried using a real bright colored one with this white eagle head on it and my mouse would take off like an eagle a lot.
